The leaked information encompasses critical personal details such as names, addresses, contact numbers, email IDs, and customer IDs. The breach, amounting to approximately 2GB of data, was disclosed by a hacker on a prominent forum.
According to a report by Forbes, the breach was claimed by a hacker known as ShopifyGUY on April 5. The authenticity of the breach was confirmed through interactions with some customers who acknowledged purchasing Boat products.

Experts emphasize the severe implications of such data breaches, extending beyond mere exposure of personal information. The compromised data renders individuals more vulnerable to financial frauds, enabling cybercriminals to orchestrate phishing attacks. Moreover, identity theft becomes a plausible threat as perpetrators exploit the breached data to assume the identities of victims, facilitating unauthorized transactions or harming credit scores, Threat Intelligence Researcher Saumay Srivastava told TOI.
Srivastava stresses, “The consequences for companies include a loss of customer confidence, legal ramifications, and reputational damage. This underscores the critical importance of implementing robust security measures.”

Yash Kadakia, founder of Security Brigade, advocates for comprehensive user notification, thorough investigation into the breach’s origins and potential access points, and the reinforcement of security protocols to forestall future breaches.
Kadakia remarks, “The data is available for purchase on certain forums for a minimal cost, indicating its potential exploitation by malicious actors for various scams involving phone calls and emails.”
